Catch and Release | How Environmental Data Will Define Form and Function

Imagine for one moment a world where the architect will be almost completely divorced from the design of the form of a building. Imagine that your home will be aesthetically designed based on the exact location of your site using environmental data such as wind and sun.

Jason Johnson, Research Fellow at Ball State’s Digital Institute and Partner at Minus Architecture Studios and Wil Marquez, Director of A2SX and research fellow at Ball State’s Digital Institute, collaborated with students at Ball State Universities Architecture Department to investigate a research project that utilized sun data in a programmatic script that generated three specific forms that were optimized to “catch” the suns rays during a 24 hour period and then “release” that energy through a series of LED lights embedded in the solar collecting panels.
