Purdue University – Wood Hall

This $65 million dollar multi-phase project entails the modernization of five Collegiate Tudor-style women’s residence halls. Constructed between 1934 and 1951, these halls are nearly identical in appearance and layout. A major challenge of this project is providing completely modern HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems in all-masonry buildings designed only for steam heat while maintaining the halls’ distinctive character. Further, the former kitchens and dining rooms are being renovated to provide office space for various housing-related functions.Finishes are being freshened and upgraded throughout the building but are designed to complement the historic elements of the buildings.

While the project is not bound by the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Historic Preservation, the intent of the Standards is being followed by the design team; exterior modifications are minimized and character – defining features are being preserved to the greatest extent possible.
